Dr. Carter is a native of Pittsburgh, PA and understood her calling to higher education and spiritual formation when she was a student at Valley Forge Christian College, now University of Valley Forge.

She began her career in higher education in 2003 at North Central University as a Resident Director. Since then, she has served in various leadership roles in student development and academic affairs at several universities. Prior to coming to EU, Dr. Carter was at Southeastern University (SEU) in Lakeland, FL, first as a research professor and program director for two doctoral programs in organizational leadership and later as the Chair of the Center for Teaching and Learning at SEU.

Dr. Carter’s research interests focus on spiritual formation, spiritual struggle, motivational theory, and best practices in higher education. Her master’s thesis at Geneva College focused on spiritual trials and faith formation in college students. Her dissertation research examined the patterns and predictors of college students’ spiritual struggle. She has published articles on academic discipline and spiritual engagement, civic responsibility development, and academic engagement.

Dr. Carter and her husband live in Springfield, MO. They have 3 daughters.

Dr. Carter is on the Editorial Board of the journal of Christian Higher Education & is a reviewer for other higher education journals. She was part of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities’ (CCCU) High Impact Scholar cohort in 2022-2024. She has spoken at higher education conferences on calling and purpose, navigating the challenges of leadership, and sustainability in leadership. She has spoken at women’s conferences on how to study the Bible and calling and purpose.
