SPRINGFIELD, Missouri — Dr. Martin Mittelstadt, professor of New Testament Theology at Evangel University, recently released his latest book, “The Evolution of a Pentecostal Scholar: Twenty Years in Luke-Acts,” which includes a collection of previously published essays and fresh reflections highlighting more than two decades of academic engagement with Luke-Acts.

Mittelstadt, a Winnipeg, Canada native, began his professorship at EU in 2000, and currently teaches New Testament, Pentecostal Theology, and Spiritual Formation courses in the university’s Theology and Global Church Ministries Department.

“Luke-Acts proves central to the Pentecostal story and by extension to my evolution,” said Mittelstadt. “Without Luke I may not have survived as a Pentecostal. Through Luke I have come both to own Pentecostal roots and thrive in the movement.”

He is a prolific author whose works include “Spirit and Suffering in Luke-Acts” (2004) and “Reading Luke-Acts in the Pentecostal Tradition” (2010), which won the 2011 Book of the Year Award from the Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship. Other recent works include “Canadian Pentecostal Reader: The First Generation of Pentecostal Voices in Canada. 1907-1925” (co-authored 2021) and “Receiving Scripture in the Pentecostal Tradition” (co-edited 2021).

Mittelstadt is former president of the Society of Pentecostal Studies and is a member of the ecumenical dialogue between representatives of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches of North America. He co-chairs the local chapter of Catholic/Pentecostal Dialogue.

“Martin Mittelstadt brings together, in one place, a collection of essays and reflections on Luke-Acts that spans a distinguished career of scholarship,” said John Christopher Thomas, professor of biblical studies at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary. “His considerable methodological and theological breadth is evident, resulting in groundbreaking studies that have helped to transform the landscape he inherited from those who preceded him.”
