SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Evangel University Assistant Professor of Social Work and Coordinator of Field Education Dr. Lisa Street was recently awarded the 2021 Field Educator Prize for Excellence in Field Education Scholarship for a submitted article titled, “Field Instructors as Professional Gatekeepers: A Qualitative Study of Gatekeeping Influences.”
Field Educator is an online journal published by the Simmons School of Social Work that promotes knowledge exchange among the social work field education community. It is the first journal fully devoted to social work field education.
The Simmons School of Social Work and the Field Educator sponsor an annual award to promote excellence in field education scholarship. Submitted articles must demonstrate rigor and relevance in addressing an important issue regarding field education and contribute to the advancement of understanding and innovation in field education. Awardees receive a cash prize.
Street’s article addressed the issues that field educators face as they work with students who may struggle to transition from the classroom to real-world clinical settings. Street identified four key factors that field educators wrestle with as they supervise struggling students – identification with their roles as field instructors, ethical obligations as professional social workers, personal commitments to their students, and support from the university.
Street’s article was selected for its relevance to field education and its contribution to innovation in field education pedagogy.
About Dr. Lisa Street
Street joined Evangel’s Behavioral and Social Sciences Department as a faculty member in 2015 after serving as a clinical assistant professor of social work and MSW program coordinator at Missouri State University for several years. Prior to her faculty positions, she served in medical social work practice related to emergency centers and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, adoptions, juvenile justice, drug courts, and social work administration.
She has published several articles related to the field of social work and field education and has delivered numerous public addresses related to the same.
She is a board member of Evangel’s Center for Compassion and secretary of the board for Flourish Christian Community Development Corporation. She also serves on the Institutional Review Board and Core Curriculum Committee (General Education) at Evangel.
Street was one of three Dissertation of the Year award finalists at the University of Missouri-Columbia through its Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis in 2016 and was a Springfield Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 honoree in 2007.
She holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, a Master of Social Work, and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Street and her husband, Craig, have two sons, Zachary and Nathan.
