Chen to be featured in eighth annual June Kean Pipe Organ Endowment Series

Chelsea Chen SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Organist Chelsea Chen will be featured in the eighth annual June Kean Pipe Organ Endowment Series at Evangel Univesity.

She will be playing at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Chapel auditorium at Evangel University.

There is no charge for admission, and the public is invited to attend.

This event is co-sponsored by the Evangel University Artist Series and the June Kean Pipe Organ Endowment Series, which was established in honor of the late Dr. June Kean. She was a member of Evangel’s music faculty from 1955 until her death in 1998.

About the organist:

Originally from San Diego, Calif., Chen began to study piano at a young age and was a student of Jane and Lori Bastien Flickers. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Juilliard, studying under John Weaver and Paul Jacobs.

For three years Chen was the organist at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Manhattan and leader of the Juilliard Christian Fellowship. She composed and performed in Taiwan as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar. She is currently studying under Thomas Murray in the Artist Diploma program at Yale University.

Throughout Chen’s career she has received various awards, including the Robert Baker and Charles Ives Prizes at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, and the John Erkshine Prize for scholastic and artistic distinction at the Juilliard School. In 2006, she was an Aspen Music Festival full scholarship recipient for piano.

Chen recorded her debut CD and DVD, “Live at Heinz Chapel.” Her playing has been aired on “Pipedreams” from American Public Media, Hawaii Public Radio, and Taiwan’s Good News Radio.
