Teams from Strafford, Pleasant Hope, Springfield Christian, and Lockwood participated in Evangel's high school team camp. In its sixth year, the camp provides area teams with an affordable alternative to expensive team camps. With two days of hard-hitting action and a camp schedule designed for maximum practice time, the camp is a great experience for the players and offers each coaching staff excellent opportunity for summer-time instruction. The teams participate in pass skeleton drills, inside run drills, and 11-on-11 scrimmages. The teams probably have the most fun during team challenges when teams are pitted against each other for points in down and distance or field position situations. This years camp "winner" by tabulation of challenge points and jamboree touchdowns was the Lockwood Tigers coached by Clay Lassiter.
New to camp this year was the Evangel Senior Combine. More than 30 seniors from the team where tested in the 40-yard dash, vertical leap, and the pro shuttle agility drill. The tests where tabulated for recruiting purposes for the Evangel coaching staff, but each participant also received the data for personal use.
More than 50 elementary students participated in the Junior Crusader Skills Camp. The participates rotated through stations learning the basics of each offensive and defensive position. The most popular position by unofficial vote of the campers was the running back position, because they learned how to carry the ball into the end zone complete with a diving finish. Other skills taught were development of quarterback fundamentals and proper tackling technique on defense. On the final day of camp, a hot and tired group of campers was refreshed with our drills "with water," where they learned the technique of the diving catch on a slip and slide and the fundamentals of a punt catch by catching water balloons. Each age group also got their own victory dump when the coaches dumped containers of cold ice water on them. What a great time!
Each camper leaves with a camp t-shirt, a camp picture, a Bible and participation ribbon. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
More than 30 campers joined us in our first ever junior high skills camps. The turnout was great and the kids learned advanced skills and techniques that would help develop them into quality players for their junior high and freshman football teams. Each day the campers focused on learning their primary offensive and defensive positions. This development led up to pass skeleton drills and offensve team run drills. After two days of quality instruction these very coachable athletes were actually forming quite a team. Each camper is now prepared with knowledge and skill development to help his local team in the fall. Additionally the camp focused on special teams development with stations set up for kicking, punting, returning, and snapping. Each athlete developed those skills as well.
