Springfield, Mo. — Evangel fell in the Heart of America conference tournament semifinals to William Jewell 65-59 at the Ashcroft Center Friday.
Evangel had a 29-25 lead at halftime but the Lady Cardinals went on a 15-4 run to start the second half.
Freshman center Brandi Roberts came off the bench to lead William Jewell with 16 points, 14 of them coming in the second half. Hillary Adams added 13 for the Lady Cardinals.
Evangel was led by Brianna Mingus who scored a season high 28 points. The junior from Rogersville scored 27 in the tournament opener. Tag Morris scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
In the first half, Mingus surpassed 1,000 career points making her the 19th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in her career. She currently has 1,025 points.
The Lady Crusaders did not play Whitney Pollard in Friday’s game. Pollard had been playing through torn knee ligaments and was in uniform but did not enter the game.
Evangel will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA-I National Tournament in Jackson, Tennessee by winning the HAAC regular season title. The national tournament bracket and schedule will be released by the NAIA on Wednesday. The first round of the tournament is March 18 and 19 and runs through March 24.
