Liberty, Mo. — The Evangel Lady Crusaders took sole possession of first place in the Heart of America conference with a 48-39 win over William Jewell Thursday night in Liberty.
Evangel overcame a 21-12 halftime deficit and bounced back from shooting 19 percent from the floor in the first half to shoot 52 percent from the floor in the second half as they outscored the Lady Cardinals 36-18 in the last 20 minutes.
Whitney Pollard, returning to the line-up after missing two games with torn knee ligaments, led all scorers with 14 points and Ashlee Luko had 13, all in the second half.
Evangel improved to 19-9 and 16-3 in the conference and dropped William Jewell to 20-9, 14-5.
Avila’s 61-57 win over Benedictine Thursday puts Evangel alone in first place. The Lady Crusaders face Avila on Saturday and must win the game to clinch the regular season title. An Evangel loss could drop them to third place with Benedictine holding a tie-breaker advantage in the event of a second place tie.
