Belize 2004

Evangel students to provide medical services in Belize

Nine Evangel University pre-med students traveled to Belize, Central America, May 8-16, 2004, to participate in Evangel’s 3rd annual medical missions trip. The trip was co-sponsored by Evangel University’s Science and Technology Department and HealthCare Ministries of the Assemblies of God.

Over 1,100 clinical examinations were given at three locations: Alta Vista, Dangriga, Belmopan.

Many of our patients cried when receiving the medications so desperately needed, when they could read the Scriptures again after many years, and when they were prayed for.

The host missionaries were very complimentary of our team’s self-sacrificing spirit, teamwork, and humility. They said we were among the very best teams they had worked with.

The Evangel students were able to assist in all the clinics: medical, chiropractic, dental, optical, and the pharmacy. Many of them experienced a deep sense of call on their lives, and several plan to continue on as career medical missionaries.

The goals of the mission were met:

  1. To meet the physical needs of our patients
  2. To share the Gospel and encourage our brothers and sisters going through difficult times
  3. To provide practical integration of faith and vocation for our future medical professionals

We want to thank Evangel University for its support of this project through Project Envision (LifeWorks) scholarships and the financial support of the Department of Science and Technology.

Nicaragua 2003

Evangel University medical missions trip combines education and ministry

The students, along with a team of medical professionals served 800 to 1,000 patients in Guanacostal and Bethesda, Nicaragua, many of whom had never before received medical care. Both areas, north of Managua, are still devastated almost five years after Hurricane Mitch raged through Central America.

Honduras 2002

Evangel students serve in medical mission to Honduras

Immediately following commencement, 14 Evangel University students participated in a weeklong medical missions trip to Honduras. The Honduras Medical Brigade, a cooperative effort between Evangel University and HealthCare Ministries of the Assemblies of God, left Springfield, Mo., May 3 and arrived in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, May 4, 2002.

Accompanying the students were trip coordinator and Evangel alumnus Dr. Richard Honderick, Dr Michael Tenneson (associate professor and chair of Evangel’s pre-medical advisory committee), Susie Bryan (director of Evangel’s health services), and a group of local healthcare professionals.

This group provided medical, dental and optical treatment to 890 patients in the poorest neighborhoods of Tegucigalpa, refugee camps for victims of Hurricane Mitch, which devastated Honduras in 1998.  Missionaries Bill and Barbara Strickland and Dr. Brent Hambrick commended the students as being the most selfless, uncomplaining and spiritually dedicated medical missions team they had seen.

In addition to the physical ministry, the students ministered spiritually, resulting in 79 commitments for salvation.
