Homecoming 2008

The festivities during Homecoming 2008 ranged from the traditional game-day events to department sessions, like the Business Department’s popular Lunch and Learn panel. Present at the Thursday afternoon lunch were alumni Hannah Keller (Inventory Control Specialist, K&K True Value), Jonathon Roepcke (Audit Associate, KPMG LLP), Charity Waterman-Reeb (Marketing Strategist and Owner, the Spotted Zebra), and Katie McNeil (Business Planning Analyst, Hewlett-Packard). The four graduates shared stories of life after graduation and their experiences in the workforce.

The Business Department also hosted guest speaker Rick Barsness on Friday afternoon. Barsness, owner of Springfield’s Incredible Pizza, shared his life story, how he came to Christ, and his experience as an entrepreneur. He also brought the Incredible Pizza Nascar vehicle to display on Evangel’s campus.

Martin Film Festival

Evangel University’s Business Department recently featured The Persuaders as the first installment of the new annual Martin Film Festival. The film was shown to more than 75 students in the auditorium of Trask 101. The Persuaders covers the current state of the advertising industry and techniques agencies use to reach jaded audiences. The screening was a great success and will be followed up by three more films in the year-long Martin Film Festival. The second film, Buffet and Gates Go Back To School, was shown shortly before the end of the Fall 2008 semester. The first film of the Spring 2009 semester will be The Other Side of Outsourcing, a documentary about jobs going to India from New York Times Foreign Affairs columnist Thomas Friedman.

Ad Club Career Day

Marketing and advertising students recently got a taste of the real world with a trip to Kansas City Ad Club’s annual Career Day. Twenty-seven students, along with three faculty and staff members, attended the event at Kansas City’s Uptown Theater. Rather than a traditional job fair, Career Day gives students a chance to hear from industry professionals, interact with them personally, and discuss portfolios.

Each student attended four of the 24 breakout sessions and the two general sessions, one of which featured Brian Booker, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of Barkley, the largest employee-owned agency in the United States. Students benefited from the speakers’ candid take on advertising and marketing, what it’s like to be in the industry, and how to achieve career goals in their fields.

Current Students Jobs/Internships

Do you have any positions open for upcoming graduates or any opportunities for summer internships? As the end of year draws near, students are looking for job opportunities. If you have something available and would like us to advertise it to our business students who are qualified for the position, we would be happy to do so. OR, we are currently working on compiling a list of Spring 2009 graduates and their resumes, so if you do not have anything specific available but would like a copy of that list, we can send that to you as well. E-mail Becky Rhoades.
